Reviews about Forest Wood

Having recently moved to this side of the town, I was just out for a wander and stumbled across four carved heads on tree stumps in Forest Wood.
I'd never heard of them before, and others who live nearby hadn't either.
I thought I'd take pictures and mention it. I'd have had a look before if I had known.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust looks after the place and says that it isn't wheelchair accessible, and it is not if you follow their access advice from Forest Road in Abronhill. If you park at the very low gate designed to stop vehicles from Fannyside Road, then you should be able to scooter or wheelchair up to the carved heads. I've walked that road, but I haven't wheeled it, so that is just an assumption, but it does seem to be a fairly smooth (non paved) road for vehicles.

If you get there, in addition to the heads there are carved pine martens which I didn't see, as I wasn't expecting the carved heads.

It can be a bit muddy going to access the place, especially as I came from west of the site, but it should be fine from Fannyside Road unless it is really wet.

Scottish Wildlife Trust says this about this location:
"Forest Wood is on the southern edge of Cumbernauld. It consists mainly of plantation woodland, with small areas of lowland peat bog, heath and grassland. A number of flowering plants and fungi thrive, with damselflies and palmate newts dwelling in the pond. Cuckoos can be heard during springtime.
    Why visit?

    Highlights include:

    Sheltered and peaceful woodland
    Footpath to Palacerigg Country Park
    Diverse range of habitats

    Best time to visit?

    Spring for cuckoos
    Autumn for fungi

    Visit for:

    birdwatching woodlands pond"

You get the Wood Warbler here according to the website. Do we get actual Pine Martens? I know they are here or here abouts these days.

This is a pleasant place to walk or a great place to walk your dog, but not a great destination unless you want to see giant carved heads.
